CLAPEM

Latin American Congress of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (CLAPEM)

The Latin American Congress of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (CLAPEM), organized by the LARC-SLAPEM is the main event in these fields in the region. It takes place every two/three years and attracts researchers and students from the most important Latino American centers. It has already been organized in Venezuela, Uruguay, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Cuba and Peru.

A traditional program in a CLAPEM includes a series of short courses, aimed to introduce graduate students and young colleagues to major areas of current research and a series of invited plenary talks, invited sessions as well as general poster and oral communication sessions. A history of previous CLAPEM may be found in the following link (in Spanish): www.cmat.edu.uy/~mordecki/historia-clapems/

The eleventh edition of the CLAPEM will take place in Caracas, Venezuela, November 1-6, 2009.

The Francisco Aranda-Ordaz Prize

LARC-SLAPEM organizes every two/three years the Francisco Aranda-Ordaz Prize. It is a Ph. D. thesis contest sponsored by the Bernoulli Society, created to honor the memory of a distinguished young Mexican statistician who died tragically in 1991.

The prize is awarded for one thesis in Probability and one thesis in Statistics written by students from Latin America regardless of the country of the university offering the degree. The winners are invited to present their works at the CLAPEM meeting.

The number of candidates has grown substantially and constantly from the first awards. For the XI CLAPEM 2009 edition, 9 theses in probability and 11 theses in statistics were received, spanning the period from December 2006 to June 2009. The winners are:

In Probability, Sebastián Grymberg, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, for his thesis "Construcción y simulación perfecta de campos markovianos con splines", adviser Pablo Ferrari.

In Statistics, Maria da Gloria Abage de Lima, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil, for her thesis "Essays on heteroskedasticity", adviser Francisco Cribari.

Both winners are invited speakers to present their works in the XI CLAPEM, in Caracas, Venezuela, November 1-6, 2009.
